SAR’s French member, Surfrider Foundation Europe has today issued a call for a ban on single use plastic bags, on International Bag Free Day 2013.

Surfrider, along with Zero Waste Europe and GAIA, urges the European Commission to ensure that single use plastic bags are restricted, due to the terrible damage they do in the marine environment. Plastic bags account for roughly 40% of all marine litter across the UK and the North Sea, and around 95.5 billion bags were used in the EU in 2010 alone. There is support from across Europe for a ban on plastic bags, but so far the European Union has not taken action.

International Bag Free Day is in its fourth edition, and sees groups from around the world take action to raise awareness of the damage done by the huge global consumption of plastic bags.
