SAR member the Marine Conservation Society is calling for members of the public to respond to a public consultation run by the Scottish Government on a draft marine litter strategy.

MCS has been pushing for a marine litter strategy from the Scottish government for four years, and are working hard to ensure that as many people as possible respond to the consultation to ensure it is ambitious enough to tackle marine litter at source.

MCS believes that tackling litter at source must be a priority. Scotland is currently developing its first national litter strategy and a public consultation is ongoing. MCS is asking the Scottish Government to ensure a link betweenthe marine litter strategy and the national (terrestrial) litter strategy so there are no gaps in action to reduce inputs of litter into the sea.

The consultation comes at a time when the English Government is refusing to contemplate a plastic bag charge, leaving it behind Wales and Northern Ireland who already have taxes in place, seeing a significant drop in single use carrier bag usage, and Scotland, which will introduce a levy in October 2014. With all the other UK Governments showing ambition in tackling this serious environmental concern, maybe the English government can be shamed into stronger action.
