Today is World Oceans Day, the United Nations day dedicated to all things marine and oceanic. This year's theme is 'healthy oceans, healthy planet', but as we have been seeing in story after story this year, this currently remains more an aspiration than a reality. Seas At Risk believes that we can collectively address the issues facing us. The Paris agreement climate change offers a path towards a low-carbon future. The EU has led the way in developing new environmental protections, such as the Marine Stategy Framework Directive and a reformed Common Fisheries Policy, can deliver real protections, if member states and the Union lives up to their own aspirations. Regulations and environmental protections can and do work - but we need is the collective will, political pressure and individual responsibility to follow through on them. We hope this is the message you will take away and spread from today - that together we can create a more positive future for the world's oceans, and all those known and unknown that reside there.
Happy World Oceans Day
