In this issue, we have a roundup of the Healthy Oceans – Productive Ecosystems conference that was held in Brussels at the start of March, where our deputy director Ann Dom was part of the opening session to speak about the latest developments of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and to caution on the limits to the EU’s ‘blue growth’ plan.
Also in this issue, you can read about the progress of the EU’s efforts to curtail plastic bag usage, hear about the latest developments in the reform of Europe’s Common Fisheries Policy and learn more about the new Maritime Spatial Planning Directive. In members’ news, we hear from Surfrider Foundation and the launch of their 19th Ocean Initiative, and the Belgian anti-gillnets campaign from Natuurpunt and the Sea First Foundation.
With the European Parliament elections at the end of May, there are still a few marine policy issues to be wrapped up. This week the Parliament holds its final vote on the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund and on a new EU proposal to limit plastic bag usage. We will bring you news on those issues and the elections in our next edition, and you can keep informed in the meantime by following our website and out updates on twitter at https://twitter.com/SeasAtRisk.
With our best wishes, The Seas At Risk team.
