Analysis of the Design Efficiency of Ships that have Entered the Fleet since 2009.

All ships built after 1 January 2013 need to have an Energy Efficiency Design Index. This measure of design fuel efficiency needs to be better than a reference value which depends on the ship type and size. This study analyses the development of the design efficiency of ships that have entered the fleet from 2009 to 2016. This study finds that the average design efficiency of new ships has improved in recent years. However, the efficiency improvements seem to have stalled in 2016.

Rethink Plastic has sent an open letter to the European Commission calling on them to propose strong and harmonised EU legislation within the EU Strategy on Plastics – due to be published at the end of 2017. We call for concrete policy action on reducing, redesigning and better managing plastics, and challenge the Commission to think broader and bolder, including trying to live plastic free for a day. #RethinkPlastic!

Seas At Risk and allied NGOs have written to Siim Valmar Kiisler, Minister for the Environment of the Republic of the Estonia, asking for the forthcoming Fisheries Council exchange of views on the Commission Communication on Fishing Opportunities for 2018 to be live streamed. A public discussion on this important topic would facilitate enhanced transparency and motivate greater stakeholder involvement.
