A European Parliament resolution on the EU strategy for the Copenhagen Conference on Climate Change has upped the stakes on targets for marine bunker emissions.

The Parliament has passed a non-legislative resolution calling, amongst other things, for “shipping to be subject to the same reduction targets as other industries”. The resolution also calls on the EU to strengthen its position in the UN climate negotiations, both on emissions pledges and on climate finance for developing countries. It calls for emissions reduction targets in line with the scientific consensus and for the EU to contribute at least €30 billion per year by 2020 in climate aid for developing countries.

Fifty plus members of the European Parliament are expected in Copenhagen for the negotiations.
