Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Seas At Risk newsletter.
In this edition we consider people power in the face of government inaction on environmental protection. The Juncker Commission has been in power for a little over 1 year, and despite promises to be 'big on the big things', we have seen little in the way of solid action to protect our oceans from the scourge of plastic marine litter (as highlighted in the latest report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in our story below) or the climate impact of our shipping.
But there is hope. Across the EU and outside it, people are ready to act in defence of the health of their seas. In Denmark, 30,000 citizens have come out to support the preservation of their coastal regions, in the Mediterranean, Seas At Risk member OceanCare has completed a map of ocean noise that will assist lobbying efforts to minimise it, Seas At Risk is working with MEPs and others on a European Parliament effort to follow the United States in getting rid of polluting microbeads in cosmetics and the European Environemental Bureau has set out a new list of priorities for the EU for the coming years that better reflect the environmental reality.
We hope you enjoy this edition
