In response to the European Commission’s consultation on Port Reception Facilities, SAR has called for a list of regulatory improvements in order to better protect against oily waste discharges and the build of marine litter from ship waste dumping.

Many countries are failing to live up to their commitments to the United Nations (UN) to protect vulnerable deep sea species and ecosystems, according to two reports released today ahead of a two day debate on deep sea fisheries by the UN in New York.

Nine environmental organizations across Europe have written an appeal to the European Commissioner for Energy, urging that offshore oil drilling regulations are strengthened as part of a Commission proposal that is expected shortly.

In response to the European Commission’s consultation on reducing the use of plastic bags, Seas At Risk has put full support behind the call for a Europe wide ban on disposable bags and measures to encourage the uptake of sustainably sourced long life alternatives.

NGOs are cautiously celebrating substantial revisions to global ship waste rules, as adopted at the IMO last week. NGOs are however concerned about loopholes and the likely inability of governments to properly enforce the new regulations.

The European Commission has today published its proposal for the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy. After 2 years of consultations, the proposal contains valuable elements, but falls short of what is needed to ensure sustainable fisheries in the EU.
