Directives, regulations and laws: the EU is at the forefront of laws to protect our natural environment. Consequently, in advance of elections the European Parliament on 23-25th May, Surfrider Foundation Europe is launching the “Vote for the ocean” campaign.

The objective? To inform citizens about the environmental issues discussed in Brussels, whilst holding candidates accountable for their positions on the protection of oceans and coastlines.

Surfrider Foundation Europe’s “Vote for the Ocean” campaign aims to allow citizens to place protecting the oceans at the heart of the discussions during the European elections. In practical terms. Using Surfrider’s campaign website, European citizens can question candidates about 6 key marine issues. At the same time, candidates of at least 5 member States will receive a questionnaire assessing the extent of their commitment to confront the ecological challenges facing our oceans and coasts.

Assess the candidates on their commitment in favour of oceans and coasts

The “Vote for the Ocean” campaign also serves as a tool to assess how well the positions of candidates match Surfrider’s demands and priorities. By focusing on their own key focus issues and the upcoming agenda of the new parliament, Surfrider has developed a questionnaire built around 6 key issues: Circular Economy, Water Quality and Health, Maritime Transport, Climate Change, Volunteer Work and Citizenship, and Education in Sustainable Development. Surfrider will distribute this questionnaire to the candidates and attribute ratings to each candidate based on his/her responses. These ratings will then be published on the campaign website and made accessible to everyone.

“Vote for the Ocean,” a citizens’ action campaign
Much of the most important legislation on the environment is due to EU initiatives. This is especially true of rules relating to the protection of oceans, coasts and users of these areas; subjects that will be addressed during the term of the next Parliament.

To vote in the European elections is to make your voice heard and to help shape the society of tomorrow. This vote is also crucial to ensure that protecting the oceans is placed at the heart of EU discussions for the next five years.

By consulting Surfrider’s “Vote for the Ocean” website, citizens will be able to:

  • question their candidates via the social networks and invite them to respond to Surfrider’s questionnaire, and
  • discover their candidates’ positions on the major marine issues that Surfrider is working on.

Voting in the European elections is a precious opportunity to place the protection of the oceans at the heart of discussions in the European Parliament. Surfers, divers, sailors, swimmers or simply lovers of oceans and beaches as well as journalists, educators, parents and students: the Vote for the Ocean campaign concerns everyone! Seize it, get informed and mobilise your networks to vote!
