Seas At Risk, as well as 7 other NGOs, is calling for an ambitious revision of the Energy Taxation Directive (ETD) that falls in line with the European Green Deal and ends fossil fuel subsidies in fisheries and maritime transport.

A whopping 46.8 billion EUR per year for the EU is at stake, including €280 million per year in aviation and €4.5 billion per year in shipping for Belgium alone.  In the midst of budget debates, this Directive represents a historic opportunity to redirect public money toward climate action and social equity.

In a joint letter, we urge EU council members to meet and discuss the need to ban fossil fuel subsidies in fisheries and the maritime sector and phase out incentives that prolong their use. This crucial step towards more competitive ETD is vital for a healthy ocean and social equity.
