Ahead of the AGRIFISH Council on 22 June, Seas At Risk and a coalition of environmental NGOs have written to EU Fisheries Ministers welcoming the European Commission’s evaluation of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). They stress that while the CFP remains fit for purpose, major gaps in implementation continue to undermine its effectiveness.

The NGOs highlight the poor state of the Baltic Sea and warn that depleted fish stocks require urgent recovery measures, not further delay. They point to ongoing failures in enforcement and ecosystem-based management as key drivers of continued pressure on marine ecosystems.

They therefore call on Ministers to fully implement the existing CFP and avoid reopening the legal framework, urging instead immediate action to restore fish populations and strengthen compliance with existing rules.
