Voice of the Fish

End overfishing

Overfishing depletes fish populations faster than they can reproduce, disrupting the balance of marine life and leading to long-term ecological and socio-economic damage.

Reduce incidental catches of sensitive species

Incidental catches threaten sensitive species like dolphins, harbour porpoises, sharks, and sea birds, sometimes endangering entire populations.

Transition to low-impact fisheries

Supporting and incentivizing the adoption of low-impact and selective fisheries help preserve marine biodiversity.

Ensuring genuine safeguard of protected areas

Marine Protected Areas are crucial for maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. Unfortunately, many of these areas exist only as lines on a map, lacking effective protection measures.

Stop marine biodiversity loss

Biodiversity loss in the ocean is taking place at a faster pace than on land.

The voice of the fish: a call from the depths

“I have seen fish disappearing and underwater forests and grasslands turn into deserts.

I have heard reefs crushing under the pressure of heavy nets and dolphins crying for lost family members.

I have collected these memories to bring them to the surface and tell you about it.”

The voice of the Fish

“The Voice of the Fish” is a sculpture crafted by artist Jared Bartz in 2022. This artwork serves to raise awareness about the critical state of marine ecosystems and inspire a deeper connection between humans and the ocean. Hosted at the Sagres’ Fish Auction Interpretation Centre, in Southern Portugal, this sculpture is not just an artistic masterpiece but a call to action for the preservation of the ocean and to heal our connection with nature and wildlife.

The sculpture “Voice of the Fish” depicts a woman carrying a fish from the ocean. The fish is more than just flesh and fin. It is history, a symbol of the ancient delicate bond between humanity and the deep. For centuries, fish have been a vital link between humans and the ocean. Now, this sculpture speaks on behalf of the fish with urgency. It asks us not to look away from the unravelling beneath the waves. The sculpture challenges us to rethink and recreate our relationship with the ocean, urging us to consider the impact of our actions on marine ecosystems, and above all, to act before it is too late.

A coalition of European marine conservation NGOs embarked on an artistic journey across Europe with “The Voice of the Fish.” This sculpture travelled from the Baltic Sea coast in Germany to the South of Portugal, making stops in Luxembourg, France, and Spain, attending public events and highlighting the significant threats faced by the ocean in that region, with the objective to re-establish the broken balance between the ocean and humans.
