A UK Parliamentary Committee has branded the IMO "not fit for purpose" and the shipping industry as "irresponsible" for not doing more to tackle GHG emissions from ships.

The House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee report, which was published today, goes on to say that emissions from shipping cannot be allowed to continue to escalate and that there are no insurmountable obstacles to making cuts.

Today sees the launch of OCEAN2012, a new coalition of NGOs dedicated to transforming European fisheries policy. Its mission is to prevent over-fishing and enhance human well-being, and Seas At Risk is one of its founding members.

The start of European Fish Week got under way on Saturday June 5th and alongside a range of seminars, talks and associated events, lead organisers OCEAN2012 have launched a petition calling on Commissioner Maria Damanaki to put environmental sustainability at the heart of European fisheries policy .
