During the United Nations Ocean Conference in 2025, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, “with the digital components we have […] we can crack down on this illegal fishing that destroys our ecosystems.”

From satellite tracking to digital catch registration to deterrent sanctions, Europe has the tools to make fisheries transparent and fair, to curtail hidden overfishing, and to ensure illegal seafood does not end up on our plates.

Transparency strengthens trust, protects fish populations, and reinforces the EU’s leadership against unfair competition at home and internationally.

Now it’s over to EU Member States to use these tools.
