Scientists estimate that between 5,000 and 10,000 common dolphins are killed in the Bay of Biscay every year due to harmful fishing activities. Although dolphins are strictly protected in EU waters, insufficient measures had been taken to minimise and, where possible, eliminate the incidental catch of non-target species by their fisheries.

In a visually striking manner, NGOs asked political representatives from France, Spain and the EU Commission to complete a shared puzzle to symbolically show their responsibility and need for political will to end bycatch of our beloved dolphins at the One Ocean Summit in Brest on the 10th of February 2022.

The Puzzle was presented next to a petition signed by over 500,000 citizens urging the member state representatives to take immediate action. See the puzzle and petition hand over at the One Ocean Summit below:
