Plastic pollution remains a grave threat to all marine environments.

Several NGOs, including Seas At Risk, made two submissions with recommendations to the International Maritime Organization during the Marine Environment Protection Committee, 77th Session.

The first submission highlights the need for further investigation into the prevalence and impact of microplastics from paints and anti-fouling coatings used on ships.

The second submission requests an update on progress against all measures contained in the Action Plan to Address Marine Plastic Litter from Ships. It also requests an update on IMO’s involvement on the development of a potential negotiating mandate for a new global agreement on plastic pollution under UNEA.
