Between 1970 and 2017, shipping grew 3% annually and marine plastics from ships grew too. The main sources of (micro)plastics from ships at sea are garbage, microplastics from ropes and marine coatings, lost containers, microfibers from cruise ships’ grey waters, lost fishing nets, traps, and lines.
