Seas At Risk together with some of its members and other animal welfare stakeholders, signed an open letter to urge the European Commission President von der Leyen, the request to publish an updated animal welfare legislation before the end of the current political mandate.

The existing legislation does not adequately serve the demonstrated concerns of European citizens, nor reflect current scientific knowledge. It is essential that animal welfare legislation is revised to encompass all farmed animals according to the best scientific advice, including notably fishes & mollusks in aquaculture.

A stronger and updated animal welfare legislative framework will complement the EU Farm to Fork strategy in its aims to make the European food system fair, healthy and more sustainable.
